Potassium clavulanate (the potassium salt of clavulanic acid) is a \(\beta \)-lactamase inhibitor. It has no significant antibiotic properties on its own, but it is combined with penicillin-class antibiotics (like amoxicillin) to overcome antibiotic resistance.How It WorksMany bacteria develop resistance by producing enzymes called \(\beta \)-lactamases, which destroy antibiotics before they can work. Potassium clavulanate binds irreversibly to these enzymes, "disabling" them and allowing the antibiotic to successfully kill the bacteria
